In 1987, the seed of GEEE was planted when several Geneseo School District board members attending the annual school board convention were introduced to the concept of a local education foundation. After the discussion at the board's retreats in 1988 and 1989, plans were set in motion to form a foundation. A steering committee began drafting bylaws and laying the groundwork for what would become known as the Geneseo Endowment for Excellence in Education. A board of directors was selected from the steering committee and the first meeting was held August 16th, 1991.
After months of thoughtful planning, a public fund drive was launched on November 16th, 1991, with a kick-off breakfast at The Deck. A direct mail brochure was mailed to all residents in District #228 explaining the purpose and goals of the endowment. GEEE was formed to provide a means for all citizens to contribute to the continuation and expansion of quality educational opportunities in School District #228.
In 2015, in order to make the name user friendly, the Board of Directors chose to simplify the name to the Geneseo Education Foundation.
